Dear Knutie pie! This day would have been your 16th birthday. You are no longer with us but your spirit is stronger than ever! You brought people throughout the world together and it’s fantastic that we still are together – thanks to you!

They say ‘great love will never die’ and now we know it really is true!

Although this magazine is a tribute to you we wanted to make something special to celebrate the day when you were born.

We are all grateful to have been able to share the happy moments with you. Of course, we have mixed feelings today because it would have been so wonderful to celebrate your birthday with you in Berlin. Many of us will be there anyway because you always live in our hearts.

This is Knuti in September 2009. A photo I am proud of as it shows Knuti’s sweet eyes as he awaits food!

First pic: one of the first pics I made when arriving in Zoo Berlin on February 16, 2008 (the very first day I saw Knut). Knut was at that moment pretty busy with himself and his games/toys. And of course, the birds were there too. This pic is not really a “traditional”, but just a pic of a young polar bear having a good time.

The second pic was made on the last day of my visit in September 2010, exactly on September 4 (shortly thereafter, Knut moved to the big enclosure and I was not aware of the awful fact that I would never meet him again). When I took this pic, he was very focused on his afternoon snack. And he was a very beautiful young polar bear, isn’t it.

Zeit läuft. 5.12.2007 geschah in Berlin Ein Miracel. Knut was geboren. Uebrall in der Welt kannte man Knut. Die Leute stromten aus aller Welt zu Dir und Papi.

Auch wir kamen im Jahre 2008. Danach jährlich , ab und zu zweimal im Jahre. Du hast so viel Freude mitgebracht. Wir fanden soviel neue Freunden und Freude. Wir können Dich nie vergessen. Wir denken Dich täglich, Du Zauberbär. Berlin ohne Dich ist kein Berlin.

TBV und ich leben nun sehr schwere Zeiten, aber Du begleitest uns.

This photo is loaded with cuteness but exudes peace, calm and contentment. Like a child exhausted by play, Knut has fallen asleep with his twiggy in “hand” and is in virtually the same position as the other shots from the sequence. In my opinion, Knut was the happiest in this period of his life, even though Thomas was gone.

Knut hat so viel Gutes bewirkt, ich bin froh, dass ich viele Monate in sein Kinderzimmer schauen konnte. Durch ihn gehen wir wieder in Zoos generell, aber Eisbären sehen wir natürlich immer besonders gerne.
Eisbären sind alle schön, aber Knut war der schönste Eisbär.
