I wanted to see the polar bear Fiete, the last cub born in the old Rostock Zoo enclosure to Vilma and Lars. He was born on the 3rd of December 2014.
I visited the Budapest Zoo on April 7. As we approached the polar bear enclosure we heard very loud music, we were shocked to find that this disco music accompanied the sea lion show and was next to the Fiete enclosure.
Fiete was just lying down, but he wasn’t sleeping, as he could have been in the noise.
His enclosure is terribly small so he has not enough space for movement.
After a while Fiete started to get up, he got up very slowly and with difficulty. I was shocked how thin he was.
With a slow step he went to drink, then climbed upstairs where he had food, moving slowly.
I was shocked, Fiete is only 8 years old and looks like an old sick bear.
He ate some meat, took a broken branch that had fallen into his enclosure, rubbed himself on it for a while, and then fell asleep.
He had 2 balls in the water and a flat tire in the corner, no other toys. During the 3 hours we spent with him, he showed no activity. He was not interested in the world around him, he just lay there and looked very sad and tired.
It was heartbreaking. I think he should not stay any longer in this zoo, in this enclosure.
